Title: Trade Compliance Officer – Export

Overview
Responsible for ensuring organisational compliance with UK, EU and international import and export regulations, including US Export Administration Regulations (EAR) and International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), alongside internal corporate compliance policies.
The role works closely with programme, engineering, legal and commercial teams to ensure trade compliance considerations are embedded early within project lifecycles and that export licensing requirements are managed effectively.
This position acts as a central point of expertise for trade compliance matters across the business.
Key Responsibilities

Ensure all import and export activities comply with applicable international trade legislation, export controls and company policies.

Support project and engineering teams in establishing Commodity List Classifications, Export Control Ratings and customs classifications.

Integrate trade compliance requirements into programme delivery and support Sales to Project handover activities.

Prepare and submit UK export licence applications and relevant authorisations.

Monitor export licence usage and prepare statutory reporting and returns.

Maintain accurate import and export documentation in accordance with legislative and customer requirements.

Apply appropriate customs regimes such as Inward Processing Relief (IPR), Outward Processing Relief (OPR) and other authorised procedures to support compliant and tax-efficient trade operations.

Conduct denied party screening activities and adjudicate screening alerts.

Support management of Equipment and Technology transfers in accordance with UK and foreign export authorisations.

Deliver internal training on export control and trade compliance requirements.

Conduct periodic and ad hoc compliance audits and assessments.

Support internal and external regulatory audits.

Prepare compliance reports and draft voluntary disclosures where required.

Liaise with relevant regulatory authorities including UK export control and customs bodies and government stakeholders.

Provide trade control guidance to engineering and development teams regarding product design and component selection.

Work with operations and finance teams to ensure customs and tariff compliance.

Maintain accurate shipment processing through the company ERP system.
Compliance and Governance

Maintain and improve internal trade compliance procedures and controls.

Monitor organisational adherence to export licence conditions and regulatory obligations.

Support remediation activities where compliance risks or issues are identified.

Maintain up-to-date knowledge of trade compliance regulations through continuous professional development.
Experience and Skills

3 to 5 years’ experience within export control or international trade compliance.
-
Strong knowledge of UK export licensing and trade controls.
-
Working knowledge of EU customs regulations.

Familiarity with US ITAR and EAR requirements.
-
Experience preparing licence applications including SIELs, OIELs, OGELs and related authorisations.

Understanding of customs procedures, logistics and international shipping practices.

Experience conducting compliance audits and delivering training.
-
Strong stakeholder engagement and influencing capability.
-
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
-
High level of professional integrity.
Desirable Background
-
Experience within defence, aerospace or other regulated technology environments.

Familiarity with classification processes including ECCN identification and tariff coding.

Knowledge of sanctions regimes and restricted party screening processes.
